Indexed Universal Life Insurance

Protect the people you love. Understand the possibilities.

You want life insurance that makes sense for your family, your budget and the years ahead. Indexed universal life insurance (IUL) combines a death benefit with the potential to build cash value over time, provided the policy stays adequately funded.

I offer IUL through Americo. At Ask April Mai, I’ll help you understand how it works, what it costs and whether it deserves a place in your coverage plan.

What could IUL help you do?

Plan for lasting protection

A death benefit can help loved ones manage expenses after you’re gone. IUL is designed for long-term coverage, but keeping it in force requires enough funding to cover policy deductions.

Build potential cash value

Interest may be credited through a declared-rate account or an index-linked account. Your money isn’t directly invested in stocks. Crediting limits apply, and policy charges can reduce cash value even when the index-crediting floor applies.

Explore benefits you may use during your lifetime

Americo’s Instant Decision IUL brochure describes riders for qualifying critical, chronic and terminal illnesses. These may allow early access to part of the death benefit. Eligibility and state variations apply; acceleration reduces remaining benefits. Administrative charges and actuarial discounts reduce payouts and may result in no payment.

Let’s see whether IUL fits your goals

Start with three questions:

  • What do you want to protect? Your family’s everyday expenses, a financial obligation or a legacy for someone you love?
  • What can you comfortably commit? We’ll talk about a premium budget you can maintain over time.
  • What do you need explained? Cash value, policy costs, living benefits or how IUL compares with coverage you already have?

You don’t need to know the terminology before we talk. Bring your questions. I’ll help you work through them in plain language.

Discuss my coverage goals

What we’ll review before you decide

  1. Your priorities and existing coverage. We’ll start with what you need the insurance to accomplish.
  2. The illustration. We’ll separate guaranteed values from results that depend on assumptions. Illustrated growth is not a promise.
  3. The funding plan. We’ll look at what lower interest credits or a different premium schedule could mean for keeping coverage in force.
  4. Costs and access. We’ll review policy deductions, surrender charges, and how loans or withdrawals could affect your coverage.
  5. Your next step. If you want to explore an application, we’ll confirm the product, eligibility and availability in your state.

Common questions about IUL

How much does IUL cost?

There isn’t one premium that fits everyone. Your age, health, coverage amount and policy design help determine the cost. Let’s start with your budget and review an illustration for your situation.

Can IUL lose cash value?

Yes. An index-crediting floor does not protect your total cash value from policy charges, loans or withdrawals. Inadequate funding can cause the policy to lapse.

Can I use the cash value?

Policy loans and withdrawals may be available under the contract. They can reduce policy values and the death benefit, and loans accrue interest. Surrender charges and tax consequences may apply. We’ll review those effects before treating cash value as money available to spend.

How does IUL compare with term life insurance?

Term life covers a specified period and generally offers lower initial premiums without cash value. IUL combines longer-term protection with cash-value potential and requires ongoing attention to funding and policy performance. Your protection needs and budget should guide the comparison.

What if I already have life insurance?

Bring your recent statement and policy details. We’ll review what you have before discussing a change. Replacing coverage can introduce new costs, underwriting and different guarantees. Don’t cancel your current policy while you’re evaluating alternatives.
