Medicare Supplement insurance, also called Medigap, works with Original Medicare to help pay certain costs left by Parts A and B. Understand your enrollment rights before comparing coverage.

Start With Your Medigap Timing

Understand your one-time Medigap Open Enrollment Period, guaranteed-issue rights and whether medical underwriting may apply.

1. Confirm Your Enrollment Rights

Compare standardized plan letters, premiums, pricing approaches and carrier experience. The same letter’s core benefits are generally standardized.

2. Compare Standardized Plans

Review Original Medicare, your Medigap premium, separate Part D coverage, doctors, travel and total monthly cost.

3. Review Your Complete Coverage

What does Medicare Supplement insurance do?

Medicare Supplement insurance, commonly called Medigap, works with Original Medicare to help pay certain costs left by Parts A and B.

What it can help pay

Depending on the standardized plan, Medigap can help with eligible deductibles, copayments and coinsurance.

How it works

You keep Original Medicare Part A and Part B. Medigap supplements that coverage rather than replacing it.

What it does not include

Newly sold Medigap plans do not include Part D outpatient prescription coverage. It also does not mean every medical, long-term-care, dental or vision expense is covered.

Your most important first step

Know when your Medigap enrollment window begins

Federal Medigap Open Enrollment is generally a one-time, six-month period beginning when you are both age 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B.

1

Part B begins

You are age 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B.

2

Six-month window

Your one-time federal Medigap Open Enrollment Period generally starts.

3

Compare with protections

You generally have stronger federal protections regardless of health history.

Fall Annual Enrollment is different

The fall Medicare Annual Enrollment Period primarily concerns Medicare Advantage and Part D. It does not create a new annual Medigap open-enrollment period.

Outside a protected period

Medical underwriting may apply unless you qualify for a specific guaranteed-issue right.

Eligibility can depend on your circumstances, current coverage and applicable rules. Confirm your rights before dropping existing coverage or assuming a carrier must accept an application.

Is Plan G best for everyone?

Plan G is commonly discussed, but it is not automatically the right choice for every person.

The same letter plan generally has standardized core benefits, while premiums, underwriting, pricing approach and company experience can differ.

How the three pieces fit together

Original Medicare, Medigap and prescription coverage are separate pieces that can work together.

FOUNDATION

Original Medicare

Part A + Part B
Hospital and medical coverage.

SUPPLEMENT

Medigap

Helps with certain eligible out-of-pocket medical costs.

PRESCRIPTIONS

Standalone Part D

Drug coverage selected around your medications and pharmacy.

A Medigap insurer does not determine which prescription drug plan fits your needs. Medication coverage and pharmacy participation must be checked separately.

NORTH CAROLINA NOTE

Medigap under age 65

North Carolina has state-specific Medigap considerations for certain Medicare beneficiaries under 65 because of disability.

Those protections are not identical to the age-65 federal Open Enrollment Period. Current rules and individual eligibility should be verified.

CHANGING COVERAGE?

Medicare Advantage to Medigap

Leaving Medicare Advantage does not automatically guarantee that you can buy Medigap without medical underwriting.

  1. Check whether an election period allows the Medicare Advantage change.
  2. Confirm whether a Medigap enrollment protection applies.
  3. Understand approval and effective dates before ending coverage.

Medicare Supplement questions

Is Medigap the same as Medicare Supplement?

Yes. Medicare Supplement insurance is commonly called Medigap.

Does Medigap include prescription coverage?

Newly sold Medigap plans do not include outpatient Part D prescription coverage. A separate Part D plan may be appropriate.

Can I change plans every year without underwriting?

Not necessarily. Federal Medigap Open Enrollment is not annual, and other protections depend on your situation and applicable rules.

Can I have Medicare Advantage and Medigap?

Medigap is designed to supplement Original Medicare, not Medicare Advantage.
